KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 29, 2019) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy, with six conference championships to its credit, has won the 2018-19 Skyline Conference Presidents Cup, the league announced on Wednesday morning.
The Mariners have now won back-to-back cups, marking the first time that's occurred since St. Joseph's-Long Island turned the trick in 2014-15 and '15-16. The award measures all-sports excellence in conference competition.
"Retaining this cup is a testament to the hard work that our Midshipman-athletes and coaching staffs put forward day-in and day-out," commented Interim Athletic Director Capt. Bill Fell. "It was another memorable year for our athletic programs here at the Academy. I know that our alumni, parents and fans are all proud of the many accomplishments our teams achieved this year – and it would have been hard to do without their support."
The Mariners won conference titles in women's basketball (their first such crown), men's and women's cross country, women's lacrosse, and men's and women's swimming and diving. As such, USMMA collected a rating percentage of .853 (103.25 out of a possible 121 points).
Farmingdale State (.786) placed second after winning a conference-high seven titles (baseball, men's basketball, golf, women's soccer, softball, and men's and women's outdoor track and field), while Mount St. Mary (.675 - men's soccer champions) placed third.
St. Joseph's-Long Island (.618; titles in women's tennis and men's volleyball) and SUNY Maritime (.597; men's lacrosse champions) rounded out the top five.
Completing the tally were Old Westbury (.463), Sarah Lawrence (.462), Purchase (.456), Mount St. Vincent (.420 - women's volleyball champions), St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (.354) and Yeshiva (.351 - men's tennis champions).
A school earns points toward the Presidents Cup based upon the conference finish in each sport in which it competes. For each sport, the maximum number of points an institution can earn is equal to the number of teams competing in that sport. For sports with regular-season and conference tournament play, a school receives points based upon an average of the regular-season and conference tournament finishes. For sports with only conference championships, the finish in the championship determines the Presidents Cup points. An overall rating is generated for each school which is a percentage of total points earned divided by total possible points for that institution.
