    Three members of the USMMA men’s swimming & diving team were honored with weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 14 – junior Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.) was the Skyline and ECAC DIII Metro Swimmer of the Week, freshman Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.) earned Skyline and ECAC DIII Metro Rookie of the Week honors and freshman diver Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) was selected as the ECAC DIII Metro Diver of the Week.

    On Monday, the Skyline Conference announced that U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.) was selected as the league’s Women’s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week and sophomore Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.) landed on the weekly honor roll. Then on Wednesday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference honored junior Kara Korengel (Cincinnati, Ohio) as its DIII Metro Diver of the Week. The accolades came for the week ending Jan. 14.

  • Carmon Earns Trio Of Weekly Honors From Skyline, ECAC & MBWA

    Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) was named the Skyline Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday and then earned two more honors on Tuesday – Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Metro Player of the Week and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) DII-DIII Honorable Mention. The accolades come after her performances in the Mariners’ three Skyline victories last week – on the road over Sarah Lawrence, 79-44, on Monday and St. Joseph’s-L.I., 85-54, on Wednesday and at home over Farmingdale State, 65-62, this past Saturday.

    On Monday, the Skyline Conference announced that USMMA freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) was selected as the Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 14. Then on Tuesday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference selected him as its DIII Metro Rookie of the Week. This is the second-straight week and fourth time overall that Walsh has earned the accolade from the Skyline and second time this year from the ECAC.

    On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed in two rounds of the Mount St. Vincent Duals in the Bronx at the Dolphins’ Sharp Athletic Center. The Mariners began the day with a tough loss to the 16th-ranked team in the country, WPI, 26-9 but followed that up with a Centennial Conference victory over Muhlenberg, 29-12. With the split, USMMA’s record moves to 6-4 (2-0 Centennial).

Buzby ’79, AAF Chairman of the Board John Artzen ’79 and Paul Buhse of the USMMA Department of Public Works, celebrated the completion of the newly-renovated gym floor at the Liebertz Gymnasium in O’Hara Hall with a special ribbon cutting ceremony.

Farmingdale State fell to 8-8 overall and 7-2 in Skyline action and had its three-game winning streak snapped.

The honor comes after Goretoy’s performance in the Wagner Invitational this past Friday in Staten Island.
