FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 11, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Hiram on Saturday on the last day of the Gene Cusic Classic down in Florida. The Mariners lost the first game, 6-1, before dropping the second game, 3-1. In defeat, Merchant Marine falls to 1-6 on the season, while the Terriers improve to 7-3.

The Mariners jumped out to a 1-0 lead quickly in the bottom of the first of the opening game, scoring on an RBI double by junior Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) that plated senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.), who had led off the inning with a single and then stole second before Lucy's knock.

Junior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) got the start for USMMA and allowed just three hits and hit one batter through the first four innings. However, Hiram broke through in the fifth with the tying run and then went ahead with four more in the sixth – helped out by two Mariner errors.

Martin suffered the loss after tossing six innings (facing two batters in the seventh) and allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) finished the top of the seventh, allowing just one hit with one K.

The Terriers added one more run in the top of the last inning, before freshman pitcher Hank Clegg finished off his complete game three-hitter (seven strikeouts) with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.

In the second game, it was Hiram that got on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning. The Terriers doubled their lead to 2-0 with another run in the third, but Merchant Marine answered back with one in the next half-inning when junior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) brought in Lucy on a sacrifice fly.

Hiram tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth and the Mariners had a chance to tie it up in the top of the seventh with two runners in scoring position, however, they were unable to bring them across.

Sophomore Ben Kane (Fountain Valley, Calif.) was strong in his second start of the season, pitching the complete game, six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Terrier senior Brandon Chesmar also went the distance for the victory, allowing one run on five hits with five K's.

The Mariners are scheduled to play New Jersey City University on Tuesday afternoon, March 14, in their home-opener at Lower Roosevelt Field. If there are any potential schedule changes due to the impending snow storm, there will be announcements on www.USMMASports.com early next week.
