KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 30, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team lost its home-opener to non-conference opponent John Jay, 9-8, on Thursday at Lower Roosevelt Field. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 4-9 on the season, while the Bloodhounds improve to 3-9.
Freshman Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.) and sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) led the Mariners with two RBIs apiece, as Wilson was 3-for-5 with two doubles and Reinebold was 3-for-3 with a double, walk and sacrifice fly. Both players also scored once for Merchant Marine.
Both senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) scored a team-high two runs each. Thomson finished 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI and sophomore Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) also knocked in a run for the Mariners. Juniors Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.) also came across to score on the day.
The Mariners led for a majority of the game, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first, second and third innings to go ahead 6-3 through three. The Bloodhounds fought back to within one, 6-5, with two in the top of the fourth, but the Mariners tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth.
John Jay tied the score up at 7-7 with two runs in the top of the seventh and then took a 9-7 lead with two more in the top of the eighth. Merchant Marine threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring once and getting the tying run all the way to third base, but the Mariners were unable to bring that run across.
Seven different pitchers toed the mound for USMMA, with senior Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, N.C.) getting the starting nod and lasting two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Senior Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) pitched the third and fourth and allowed five runs (just two earned) on four hits.
Junior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) and sophomore Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) followed with hitless fifth and sixth innings, with Spinnenweber striking out two Bloodhounds. Senior Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) tossed the seventh, giving up two unearned runs on three hits. Sophomore John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit before Cunningham pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, striking out two.
For John Jay, senior Dylan Laudano and sophomore Jurrel Diaz both had a team-best two RBIs apiece. Sophomore C.J. Meyer and senior R.J. Davila both scored twice to lead the Bloodhounds. Freshman pitcher Danny Wynne earned the victory after he hurled 2.2 innings from the sixth until two outs in the ninth. Junior Christian Rodriguez picked up a save after getting the final out on just one pitch.
Up next, the Mariners will travel out to Old Westbury this Saturday, April 1, to take on the Skyline Conference rival Panthers. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Panthers' Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Live stats for both games will be available at this link.
