KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 2, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team lost a pair of Skyline Conference games to visiting SUNY Maritime on Sunday – dropping the first game 13-2 in seven innings, before losing the second by a 6-5 count. The sweep drops the Mariners' record to 4-12 (2-4 Skyline), while the Privateers improve to 11-7 (6-0 Skyline).
In the first game, Maritime opened up a 6-0 lead after two innings of play and didn't look back. The Mariners' runs came in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple by sophomore Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) that plated junior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by freshman Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.) that scored junior Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.).
Senior starter Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) suffered the loss, after going 4.2 innings and allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits despite six strikeouts. Freshman Jonathan James (Fredericksburg, Va.) finished the final 2.1 innings.
For the Privateers, senior Brian McLaughlin drove in a game-high five RBIs after going 4-for-4, while sophomore leadoff man Costleigh scored four times to lead all players. Freshman starter Travis Bruinsma tossed a complete game for the victory, giving up two runs (one earned) on just four hits with four K's.
In the second game, a costly three-run error in the top of the sixth proved to be the difference, as the Mariners held a 5-3 lead before that. Three different players knocked in runs for Merchant Marine – Wilson, junior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) and sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) – and five different players scored a run.
Sophomore Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) got the starting nod and lasted 6.1 innings, giving up six runs (just three earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts in the losing effort. Cunningham came in to get the final two outs of the top of the seventh.
McLaughlin had the Privateers' only two RBIs of the second game, while Costleigh scored four times. Junior Anthony D'Ancona earned the win for Maritime with five innings pitched, giving up five runs on seven hits with one strikeout, while freshman Matthew Paghidas picked up a save with two shutout innings with one hit allowed and two K's.
The Mariners are right back at it tomorrow, Monday, April 3, when they travel to Old Westbury to take on the Panthers in another Skyline Conference doubleheader. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 4 p.m. at OW's Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Live stats for both games are available at this link.
