OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 3, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Old Westbury on Monday – winning the first game, 17-5, before dropping the second, 9-3. The Mariners' record moves to 5-12 (3-5 Skyline), while the Panthers move to 12-10 (4-4 Skyline).
Six different players drove in runs for the Mariners in the opener, with senior Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) leading the way with five RBIs after going 3-for-5. Freshman Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.) knocked in four and was an impressive 5-for-6 from the dish, while sophomore Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) was responsible for three RBIs, including two on a double in the seventh. Senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) both had two RBIs and junior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) picked up one in the top of the ninth.
Every single player in the lineup scored for USMMA, as Thomson and freshman Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) both crossed the plate a team-best three times each. Wilson, Reinebold, sophomore Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) and junior Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.) all scored twice, while Campbell, Barnes and Grzymkowski all touched home once.
The Mariners scored one run in both the second and third innings, but the Panthers responded with one in the second and two more in the third to lead 3-2 after three. After Merchant Marine went ahead with two in the fourth, the hosts tied the score up at 4-4 with one in the bottom-half. The Mariners then exploded for six runs in the fifth, three more in the seventh and finished with four more in the ninth.
Junior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) earned the victory, pitching the complete game and giving up five runs on 17 hits with six strikeouts. He moves to 2-2 on the season.
Three different pitchers got in the game for Old Westbury, with starter freshman Jason Espinal only lasting 3.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with one K, while junior Vinny Negri suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits, also with one strikeout in just one inning of work. Five players all knocked in one run each for the Panthers, including senior Dean Sheridan, who was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a team-high two runs scored.
In the second game, the Mariners jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run on a sacrifice fly by Grzymkowski in the second inning that plated Barnes. However, Old Westbury took a 4-1 lead with four in the fourth and then opened the game wide open with five more in the fifth to go up 9-1. Merchant Marine responded with two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer by Barnes that also scored Reinebold, but the Panthers held on for the victory.
Freshman Ben Kane (Fountain Valley, Calif.) suffered the loss after tossing four innings and giving up four runs on three hits. Senior Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, N.C.) came in in relief and allowed five runs (just one earned) on four hits while striking out four. Sophomore John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) finished the game and gave up just one hit with one K.
Senior Jesse Matos led Old Westbury with two RBIs and three different Panthers scored two runs each to lead the squad. Senior Daniel Aguilo got the win after going six innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Classmate James English finished the game in the seventh, giving up one hit and striking out one.
