PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 8, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team traveled out to the campus of St. Joseph's College of Long Island in Suffolk County to take on Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's of Brooklyn in a doubleheader. After dropping the opener, 3-1, the Mariners bounced back to take the second game, 6-4. With the split, USMMA moves to 6-13 (4-6 Skyline), while the Bears' record is now 8-9 (7-3 Skyline).
After scoring a run in the fourth inning, the Mariners led the opener for three innings until SJC broke through with two runs in the bottom of the seventh before tacking on one more in the eighth.
Junior Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.) knocked in Merchant Marine's only run with a sacrifice fly that plated classmate Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.). After senior Nicholas LoPrinzi gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with a two-run single in the seventh, the Mariners threatened by loading the bases with no outs in the eighth, but they couldn't cash in.
LoPrinzi finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs, while three different players scored for St. Joseph's. Senior pitcher Mitch Brigando earned the victory after hurling all nine innings and giving up just the one run on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Senior Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) suffered the loss despite pitching the full game, as he allowed three runs on 13 hits with six Ks.
The Mariners struck early in the seven-inning second game, as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. They added one more in the fourth, but St. Joe's put up a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth. USMMA responded with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and held off a threat in the bottom half to secure the win.
Junior Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) had a two-RBI single for Merchant Marine in the first that scored senior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshman Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.). Wilson, Barnes and sophomore Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) also knocked in runs for the Mariners. Wilson scored twice, while Thomson, Campbell, sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) and freshman Matt Mundorf (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) also crossed the plate.
Sophomore starter Andrew Spinninweber (Pasadena, Md.) got the "W" after throwing six innings and giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Cunningham earned his first career save after pitching the ninth and allowing one run on one hit.
Senior Connor Pasetti got tagged with the loss for the Bears. He lasted six and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with two Ks. Freshman reliever William DeLuca was tacked for two more runs on three hits in one inning's work. Lo Prinzi knocked in another run in the second game, as he was 2-for-3, and senior Francis Rapp also brought a run in for St. Joseph's.
The Mariners are right back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 9, when they host Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent for a doubleheader beginning at 12-noon at Lower Roosevelt Field. Live stats for the both games will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
