Mariners Triumph Over Pitt.-Bradford, 14-6, Friday Afternoon

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 9, 2018) – The USMMA baseball team defeated the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford, 14-6, on Friday down at the Cusic Classic in Florida. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 5-3. 

The Mariners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added three runs in three-straight innings – the sixth, seventh and eighth – to build up a 10-0 advantage. UPB cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the eighth with five runs, but Merchant Marine tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth to help secure the victory. 

Leading the Mariners was junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored and classmate Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) who was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs. Two other Mariners contributed two RBIs each – junior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) and freshman Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – and they both scored once. 

Senior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) along with freshmen Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) and Jack McCann (Newark, Del.) all knocked in one run apiece, with Barnes also scoring two runs. 

Also scoring twice were senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) and freshman Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.)

Merchant Marine swiped a season-best seven bases in the contest with Alteri leading the way with two steals. 

On the mound, freshman Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) earned the win, his second of the season, with seven shutout innings pitched. He allowed six hits and struck out 12 batters. Junior John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) was solid in 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

The Mariners will now prepare for their biggest day down at the Cusic Classic – their doubleheader against arch-rival Coast Guard tomorrow, Saturday, March 10. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Player Development Complex Field #4 in Fort Myers, Fla.
