FORT MYERS, Fla.. (March 3, 2019) – On Sunday, the USMMA baseball team earned wins over Hiram and Mitchell in a pair of nine-inning games on the Mariners' first day of the Cusic Classic down in Florida. With the victories, Merchant Marine improved to 2-0 on the season, while Hiram started the year 0-1 and Mitchell fell to 2-2.

The Mariners were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, when they scored two runs to take the lead on a double by senior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) that plated sophomore Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.) as the tying run and classmate Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) also came across as the go-ahead run after a costly error by the Terries' left fielder. The Mariners also got RBIs from Alteri and senior Jesse Reinebold (Sagamihara, Japan).
Senior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) got the start and lasted six innings. Sophomore Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) earned the victory after pitching the seventh and eighth innings. Cunningham pitched the ninth inning to pick up the save.
In the second game against Mitchell, sophomore Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) got the "W" after six strong innings. Reinebold had three hits – a single, double and triple – and also knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.

The Mariners are right back at it tomorrow, Monday, March 4, for a doubleheader against Hiram. The twin-bill (two seven-inning games) will begin at 3 p.m.
