KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 31, 2019) – The USMMA baseball team closed out the month of March with a pair of Skyline victories over Yeshiva University on Senior Day Sunday at Lower Roosevelt Field. The Mariners won the first game, 29-2, and took the second by the final of 9-1. With the wins, Merchant Marine improves to 14-7 (6-2 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 1-15 (0-10 Skyline).

Prior to the first pitch, which was delayed about 25 minutes due to rainy weather, the Mariner baseball program paid tribute to its nine graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Trevor Fox (Northport, N.Y.), Jesse Reinebold (Sagamihara, Japan), Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.), Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.), Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.), Reilly Cherry (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho), Adam Viscovich (Whitestone, N.Y.), Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) and John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.)

Game 1 Highlights

  • Kelly Jr. got the starting nod for the opener and earned the victory, his second of the year, after tossing five innings of one-run ball with three hits allowed and a career-high eight strikeouts. He moves to 2-1 on the season.
  • The Mariners stole a total of 12 bases in the game, with six coming in an eight-run first inning. Sophomore Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) led all players with four swipes, while classmates Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) had two apiece.
  • 12 different players recorded hits in the opener, with Reinebold leading the way with four, followed by Cherry with three, as Cherry fell just a home run shy of the cycle.
  • 14 different Mariners had RBIs, as freshman Zach Coutts (Grand Junction, Colo.) had a game-high four and Alteri had three (all in the first inning). Seven other players had two RBIs apiece – Reinebold, Mesaros, Cherry, Viscovich, Winzer and freshmen Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) and Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.).
  • Fox finished the final two innings on the mound, giving up a run on three hits with three strikeouts.
  • In the game, Reinebold caught for one batter in the sixth inning, more on that later.
  • The game ended after the top of the seventh due to a 10-run mercy rule.

Game 2 Highlights

  • Junior Ben Kane (Huntington Beach, Calif.) started the second game and got the win after hurling four innings, allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeouts. He improves to 2-2 on the year.
  • The Mariners broke through with six runs in the bottom of the second inning. They went on to add another in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
  • Freshman Zac Skov (San Clemente, Calif.) knocked in a team-best three runs on a two-run triple in the second and an RBI single in the sixth.
  • Coutts led all players in the game with three stolen bases, as he accounted for half of the Mariners' SBs in the game. Skov swiped back-to-back bags in the fourth inning to finish with two stolen bases.
  • Reinebold took the hill to start the fifth inning, and he struck out the only batter he faced. With the appearance on the mound, the senior has now played all nine field positions for the Mariners throughout his career.
  • Freshman Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.) finished the fifth and junior Garrick Colorado (Williamsburg, Va.) pitched a scoreless sixth with one strikeout.
  • Freshman Lane Hagstrom (Farmington, N.M.) got the first two outs of the seventh and Fox came in to finish the game, with the final out coming on a leaping grab by freshman Cash McKay (Granbury, Texas) out in right field.

The Mariners are back in action this Wednesday, April 3, for a road non-conference game at Bard College beginning at 3 p.m. at the Raptors' Honey Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page
