KINGS POINT, N.Y. (July 5, 2017) – On Wednesday, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy head football coach Mike Toop '77 announced the scheduled for the upcoming 2017 season, his 13th year on the sidelines here at his alma mater. The Mariners are coming off an impressive 5-4 campaign in 2016 and will look to continue their winning ways into the new season.
The USMMA football team will compete in the newly-established NEWMAC Football Conference for the first time in 2017, joining Catholic, Maine Maritime, MIT, Norwich, Springfield, WPI and arch-rival Coast Guard in the league.
The Mariners will play a total of nine games for the third-straight season, with five contests at home at Brooks Stadium and four on the road. They will face four familiar teams which they played in 2016 – SUNY Maritime, Springfield, WPI and Coast Guard – three schools which they haven't played in a while – Maine Maritime (only meeting was in 1964), Norwich (last of 19 meetings was in 2003) and Catholic (last of six meetings was in 1996) – and two completely new opponents – Misericordia and MIT.
The 2017 campaign kicks off against one of those new opponent for the program, Misericordia University. The first-ever meeting between the Mariners and the Cougars will be on Saturday, Sept. 2, in Kings Point. The USMMA community will be celebrating Parents Weekend Festivities around the contest, which will begin at 1 p.m.
After a bye week, the squad will host the annual "Battle of the Throgs Neck Bridge" against rival SUNY Maritime on Saturday, Sept. 16. That game will be played on Homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend at the Academy, with kickoff slated for 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. More information on the weekend's festivities will be available in early September.
The remainder of the games throughout the season will be played against NEWMAC opponents, beginning with an Sept. 23 meeting against Maine Maritime up in Castine, Maine. That will be followed by a home matchup against the MIT Engineers on Sept. 30 at 12-noon.
October opens with a road game at Norwich University on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Mariners will then host (for the third straight season) old Liberty League foe Springfield College on Oct. 14, before a trip up to Worcester, Mass., to face WPI the following weekend on Oct. 21 closes out the month of October.
The Mariners will return back home and recognize their 19 seniors of the Class of 2018 on Senior Day, which is slated for Saturday, Nov. 4, before the home NEWMAC contest against Catholic that begins at 12-noon.
The regular season will conclude on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, with the annual Secretaries' Cup matchup against the Coast Guard Academy. This year's rivalry game between the Mariners and the Bears will be televised nationally on the ESPN family of networks. A start time has yet to be announced for the contest, which will be played at USCGA's Cadet Memorial Field in New London, Conn.
Admission for all 2017 home games is free. All home games will also feature live stats and a live video stream on the USMMA Sports Network. Links to follow along with all games throughout the 2017 season will be available on the USMMA Football Schedule Page.
