KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 6, 2018) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy head coach Mike Toop '77 has released the schedule for the upcoming 2018 football season, his 14th year manning the sidelines for his alma mater. The full slate features a total of nine regular season games, including seven against NEWMAC Football Conference opponents. The Mariners will play four games at home on Captain James Harvey Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium, and five away from Kings Point.
The season kicks off on the road at non-conference opponent Misericordia University on Saturday, Sept. 1. This will be the second meeting between the two schools, with Merchant Marine winning last year's contest, 56-35.
After an early bye week, the Mariners hit the road once again to take on industry-rival institution, SUNY Maritime College, on Friday night, Sept. 14, in Throggs Neck, N.Y. That game will serve as the final primer before NEWMAC action begins.
The first home game - and first NEWMAC contest - of the 2018 season comes on Homecoming Weekend against another industry-rival school, Maine Maritime, on Saturday, Sept. 22. More information on Homecoming Weekend will be available on www.USMMASports.com in the weeks ahead of the festivities.
September closes out with a trip up to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday, Sept. 29, to face MIT.
USMMA will play host to Norwich University on Saturday, Oct. 6, before a trip up to face the 2017 NEWMAC Champions, Springfield College the following week on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Mariners return home for Senior Day against WPI on Saturday, Oct. 20, and will take their final bye week the final weekend of October.
The final month of the season sees Merchant Marine visiting Catholic University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Nov. 3, ahead of the highly-anticipated 2018 Secretaries' Cup showdown at home on Saturday, Nov. 10, against arch-rival Coast Guard.
For the second-straight season, the Secretaries' Cup game will be broadcasted by the ESPN family of networks. More information for the game, including the start time and broadcast channel, will be available closer to the contest.
The Mariners are looking to build upon their very successful 2017 season, which saw the team compile a 6-4 record, including the Secretaries' Cup victory over Coast Guard and the program's fifth ECAC Bowl Championship with a 35-20 win over Buffalo State in the Clayton Chapman Bowl.
