KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2018) – This past Monday, the Skyline Conference announced that USMMA freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) was named the league's men's basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 7. This is the third time this season that Walsh has earned this accolade (Nov. 27 & Dec. 11).
Walsh shot 6-for-12 from the field with two three-pointers en route to team-high 15 points in the Mariners' 79-71 home loss to Old Westbury this past Saturday. He also added four rebounds, two assists and as many blocks in the outing. The rookie is one of five Mariners to rank in the top-10 in the Skyline in a statistical category up to this point in the season, as his 2.1 three-pointers per game are good for ninth in the league.
Below are the other Mariners that rank in the top-10 in the conference:
- Junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) ranks sixth with 9.0 rebounds per game and is second with 2.2 steals per game and seventh with 1.2 blocks per game.
- Sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) ranks third with a .388 three-point shooting percentage and his 2.6 "threes" per game are good for fourth.
- Senior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) is tied for fourth in the Skyline with 1.9 steals per game.
- Sophomore Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) ranks sixth in both assists per game (3.6) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4).
The Mariners (5-6, 3-4 Skyline) return to the court tonight, Jan. 10, out at St. Joseph's College of Long Island (2-9, 2-5 Skyline) in Patchogue, Suffolk County, N.Y. as part of a road Skyline doubleheader with the women's team.
