Men’s Basketball Loses At Sarah Lawrence Thursday Night, 61-54

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2018) – The USMMA men's basketball team dropped its Skyline Conference contest up at Sarah Lawrence College, 61-54, on Thursday night at the Gryphons' Campbell Sports Center. The Mariners fall to 0-3 (0-2 Skyline) on the season with the loss, while SLC improves to 4-3 (3-0 Skyline) with the victory.

Three players scored in double-digits for the Mariners, with junior Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) leading with 12 points off the bench on four three-pointers. Sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) added 11 and junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) had 10. Freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) brought down a team-best nine rebounds. 

After a back-and-forth first eight minutes, Sarah Lawrence jumped out to an 11-point lead, 21-10, at 6:04. Merchant Marine fought back to within four with under four minutes to play and settled for a six-point deficit into the halftime break, 25-19. 

The Mariners scored the first six points of the second half to tie the score up at 25-25 at 18:27, however the Gryphons responded with a 10-2 run to put the hosts up by eight, 35-27, at 13:43. USMMA came back to within just one point after an 11-4 run made it 39-38 at 10:09, but once again SLC countered, this time with eight-straight points. 

Merchant Marine cut that deficit down to just four with 4:26 to go, however Sarah Lawrence began to pull away, eventually getting their lead up to a game-best 12 points with 2:12 to go. The Mariners were able to get within five, but it was with just 16 seconds left in the game before a pair of free throws sealed the win for the Gryphons.

For SLC, sophomore Enike Anyia recorded a double-double after he led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Junior B.J. Sanders and sophomore Isaiah Pean both chipped in with 11 points each, while senior Austin Jones dished out a game-high six assists. 

The Mariners return to action this Sunday, Dec. 2, when they play host to arch-rival Coast Guard. Action is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page
