Mariners Suffer 58-51 Road Loss At St. Joe’s-Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost its road, Skyline Conference game at St. Joseph's-Long Island, 58-51, on Thursday night at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Center. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 3-8 (1-6 Skyline), while St. Joe's improves to 4-9 (3-6 Skyline) with the victory. 

Senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led Merchant Marine with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, with a game-high nine rebounds. Junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) contributed nine points, while sophomores James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) and Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) as well as freshman Blain McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) all had six points apiece. McDonough also led all players in the game with five assists and two steals. 

There were a total of 12 lead changes in a back-and-forth first half, with the Golden Eagles claiming the largest lead of the half when they went ahead, 17-12, at 9:56. The Mariners rattled off seven straight points to go ahead 19-17 at 5:48, but the two teams traded leads five more times down the stretch of the period before finally ending up with a tie score, 25-25, at the half. 

The game remained close through the first 10 minutes of the second half. With the score tied at 37 at 10:29, the Golden Eagles began a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the night at 8:37. USMMA fought all the way back to one, 49-48, with 5:20 to play. After trading baskets, St. Joe's went ahead by seven once against after six-straight points, this time with just 23 seconds remaining. 

Merchant Marine made it interesting with a three-pointer by Barnes with 14 seconds to go, but SJC nailed three-of-four free throws late to claim the victory. 

Three players scored in double-figures for St. Joseph's, with junior Frank Basile leading the way with 20 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Mike Harris added 16 points and junior Brad Weiss contributed 11 as well as a game-best three blocked shots. 

The Mariners will play next this Saturday, Jan.10, at 2 p.m. at home against Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page
