Men’s Basketball Drops Skyline Rivalry Matchup At SUNY Maritime, 67-62

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost its Skyline rivalry game up at SUNY Maritime, 67-62, on Saturday afternoon in the Privateers' Riesenberg Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 7-13 (5-11 Skyline), while Maritime improves to 5-17 (4-13 Skyline) with the victory. 

Junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) both scored a team-high 15 points, while senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) was right behind with14 to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. 

Freshman Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) added nine and junior Michael Bell (Ashburn, Va.) contributed seven points off the bench. 

The Mariners led by as many as 14 points near the end of the first half and went into the locker room with a 35-26 advantage. The SUNY Maritime offense exploded for 41 points in the second half, but the game was close late. 

With the two teams knotted up at 60-60 with just 1:48 to go, the Privateers hit a jumper and a three to take a 65-60 lead with 34 ticks left. The Mariners were unable to counter, as they hit just a layup late, and Maritime nailed two free throws with seven seconds left to secure the victory. 

For the Privateers, junior Brendan McGovern scored a game-high 24 points, while sophomore Husene Camara and freshman Ryan Donovan both drained 10 apiece. Sophomore Brennan Whelan nearly had a double-double with a game-high 10 assists to go along with a team-best eight rebounds. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel back to the Bronx on Wednesday night, Feb. 6, for a Skyline showdown with the Dolphins of the College of Mount St. Vincent.
