KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 23, 2019) – Earlier this month, members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team completed a community service project with the Shelter Rock Church Food Pantry located in Great Neck, N.Y.

Partaking in the project were Assistant Coach Derek Brooks, juniors Michael Bell (Ashburn, Va.)Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas)Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.)Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) and Will Quigley (Trumbull, Conn.) and freshmen Matt Cooper (Hartsdale, N.Y.), Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.)Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) and Isaiah Nix (Yorktown, Va.).

The Shelter Rock Church operates a food pantry every Tuesday out of the Hagedorn Community Center. The pantry helps provide seasonal produce, frozen goods and non-perishable goods donated by businesses within the greater Long Island community as well as individuals.

While at the food pantry, the men's basketball team helped in several capacities. This included stocking shelves with produce and canned goods, performing minor landscaping around the community center, individually helping community members pick food from the pantry, carrying people's bags to their cars, keeping shelves within the pantry stocked and organized, as well as managing wasted produce and packaging.

All of these tasks saw members of the basketball program partaking in one-on-one interaction with members of the community, which proved to be worthwhile.

The Food Pantry is run by members of the Shelter Rock Church. More information on the food pantry and the Church, can be found at their website: http://shelterrockchurch.com/foodpantry/
