MADISON, N.J. (March 11, 2017) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team had a very strong second half at FDU-Florham on Saturday, nearly coming all the way back from a halftime deficit of 5-0 and then a fourth-quarter deficit of 10-6, but the host Devils held off the Mariners to claim the 10-9 decision. Merchant Marine falls to an even 1-1 in defeat, while FDU wins its fourth-straight to improve to 4-1.
Four different Mariners found the back of the net two times apiece – juniors Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) and Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.), senior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.). Coll also finished with an assist to lead all USMMA players with three points. Junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) recorded a goal and an assist and sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) contributed to the offense with one helper.
The Devils shutout the USMMA offense completely in the first half, as they charged ahead to a 5-0 lead with three goals in the opening quarter and two more in the second. Senior goalie Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) played the first 30 minutes for Merchant Marine and made eight saves.
Treon opened the scoring at 11:49 of the third quarter with the Mariners' first of the day. After FDU-Florham responded less than a minute later, the Mariners rattled off five-straight goals to make it a one-goal game, 6-5, at 4:27. The Devils scored with just 10 seconds remaining to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth.
FDU scored the three of the first four goals of the fourth to go up 10-6 with 6:16 remaining. From there, USMMA got goals from Connors (3:24), Coll (1:59) and McGovern (1:10), but were unable to find the equalizer in the final minute-plus.
Freshman Zach Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) played the second half between the pipes for the Mariners and made seven saves. Junior Max Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) led Merchant Marine with five groundballs, while McGovern and freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) both had four apiece. Sophomore Jeb Brown (Westport, Mass.) was 7-for-16 from the faceoff-X to lead the Mariners.
The Devils got a game-high six points from freshman John Belanger, who scored four times and added two assists. Classmate Alec Orazietti contributed three goals and an assist and three others players scored once each. Sophomore goalie Tom Tornetto earned the victory, playing all 60 minutes and making an impressive 17 saves.
