UNION, N.J. (March 18, 2017) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team took advantage of a costly three-minute, non-releasable penalty by Kean University late in the fourth quarter to win its Skyline Conference opener on Saturday, 10-9, at the Cougars' Alumni Stadium. In victory, the Mariners improve to 2-1 (1-0 Skyline) on the season, while Kean falls to 2-3 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Merchant Marine trailed 8-7 with under five minutes to play in regulation, but the Cougars were called for an illegal stick penalty at 4:47 and the Mariners cashed in with two goals on the uninterrupted man-up opportunity and then scored once more to take a 10-8 lead with under a minute to play. Kean scored with 41 seconds remaining, but the USMMA defense came up big in the final seconds to preserve the victory.

The two teams traded goals twice in the third and ended the quarter with the hosts ahead, 6-5. After Kean scored the first goal of the fourth to make it 7-5, the Mariners tied it up with back-to-back tallies by Roros and Dodson.
