UNION, N.J. (March 18, 2017) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team took advantage of a costly three-minute, non-releasable penalty by Kean University late in the fourth quarter to win its Skyline Conference opener on Saturday, 10-9, at the Cougars' Alumni Stadium. In victory, the Mariners improve to 2-1 (1-0 Skyline) on the season, while Kean falls to 2-3 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.
Merchant Marine trailed 8-7 with under five minutes to play in regulation, but the Cougars were called for an illegal stick penalty at 4:47 and the Mariners cashed in with two goals on the uninterrupted man-up opportunity and then scored once more to take a 10-8 lead with under a minute to play. Kean scored with 41 seconds remaining, but the USMMA defense came up big in the final seconds to preserve the victory.
Sophomore Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) recorded a game-high six points with five goals and one assist, while freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) contributed two goals and one helper. Rookie Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) added one tally and one assist and juniors Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) both chipped in with one goal apiece. Three Mariners registered one assist each on the day – sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.), senior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.).
Defensively, senior Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.) led all players in the game with three caused turnovers and junior Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) had a team-best three groundballs. In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) got the start and played the first two quarters, recording three saves. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) finished the game and made five saves in route to earning his second victory of the season.
The Mariners scored the first two goals of the game, but Kean responded with four straight – two in the first quarter and two more in the second – before the Mariners ended the scoring in the opening half with their third of the day. The Cougars took a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.
The two teams traded goals twice in the third and ended the quarter with the hosts ahead, 6-5. After Kean scored the first goal of the fourth to make it 7-5, the Mariners tied it up with back-to-back tallies by Roros and Dodson. The Cougars went ahead 8-7 at 4:47, but during the stoppage after the goal, sophomore Connor Baucom was called for the illegal stick three-minute, non-releasable penalty that proved to be the difference in the game.
For Kean, senior Matt Brodley had three goals and two assists for five points. Junior Alec Ramos and freshman Jake Frankovits both added a goal and an assist apiece and four other Cougars found the back of the net. Sophomore Connor Baucom picked up a game-high seven groundballs and was dominant from the faceoff-X, winning 16-of-20 draws, while senior Lucas Kiernan recorded six GBs. Senior Bryan Phillips chipped in on defense with a team-best two caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Ryan Sieb made six saves in the losing effort.
Up next, Merchant Marine travels to Manhattanville College on Wednesday night, March 22, for a non-conference tilt against the Valiants. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field.
