Mariners Claim Hagedorn Cup For The Ninth-Straight Year With 12-6 Road Win At SUNY Maritime

BRONX, N.Y. (April 1, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated rival SUNY Maritime, 12-6, on the road on Saturday at the Privateers' Reinhart Field to capture the Capt. John Hagedorn Cup for the eighth-straight season and the ninth time in the 10 years that the cup has been contested for. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 5-2 (3-1 Skyline) on the season, while Maritime falls to 4-5 (2-2 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led all players in the game with eight points on seven goals and one assist. Sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) contributed four points with one tally and a game-high three helpers, while junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice and dished out one assist. Sophomore Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) and freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) also scored for the Mariners.
 
In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Canton Catonsville, Md.) earned the victory after playing the entire first half and making six saves. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) was strong in the second half to secure the win, making 12 stops for his second-straight game with double-digit saves.
 
Senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) was 8-for-22 on faceoffs with a team-high six groundballs. Freshmen Nick Vinberg (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) both gobbled up five GBs apiece, while Vinberg caused a game-high four turnovers and classmate Jake Erickson (Cicero, N.Y.) registered three CTs.
 
The Privateers had three players lead the team with two points each – sophomore Ian Ziemski scored twice, while junior Julius Diaz and junior T.J. Ragusa both added a goal and an assist apiece. Junior goalie Brendan McNally suffered the loss despite making 17 saves. He was replaced by sophomore Justin Weigold with just over three minutes to play, who made three saves in the closing minutes.
