WATCH! Coll's Game-Winner

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (April 15, 2017) – Junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) buried the game-winning goal at 2:29 of the second sudden-victory overtime to lift the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team to a dramatic 13-12 win over arch-rival Coast Guard on an unforgettable Saturday afternoon down at Navy. The Mariners, who improve to 8-3 overall on the season, did not hold a lead in the game until Coll's winner. The Bears fall to 7-5 with the loss.

Coll was one of three Mariners that recorded hat-tricks on the day, as freshmen Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) and Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) also found the back of the net three times each. Coll also added one assist. Junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) scored twice for Merchant Marine and classmate Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) added a goal and three helpers for four points in the win. Sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) contributed a goal and an assist and senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) dished out two assists.

Whitenack led the Mariners with seven groundballs, while four other Mariners scooped up three GBs apiece – Treon, junior middie Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texaxs) and senior defender Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.). Keyes also tied for the game-high in causing two turnovers.

In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) got the start and made four saves in the first half. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) earned the victory after playing the second half and all of the action in overtime. He made five saves in over 35 minutes between the pipes.

Coast Guard jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening nine minutes of the game, but the Mariners fought back with the last two goals of the first quarter by Roros (assisted by Coll) and Connors and then two of the first three tallies to open the second – Dodson (assisted by Treon) on a man-up opportunity and Roros (assisted by Renard).

The Bears scored with just 1:21 to go in the half to go up, 5-4, but committed a penalty when the clock hit zero, which gave Merchant Marine a man-up opportunity for the opening minute of the third quarter.

Dodson cashed in for his second of the game just 38 seconds into the second half to tie the score up at 5-5. Coast Guard scored back-to-back goals just 54 seconds apart at 8:36 and 7:30 to jump ahead 7-5, however USMMA responded with two of their own when Roros picked up his hat-trick goal and Coll scored his first with 59 seconds left in the third and the quarter ended with the score tied 7-7.

The Bears got momentum yet again early in the fourth by scoring three of the first four goals to go up 10-8 at 7:07. The two teams traded the next six goals with the Mariners striking first and Coast Guard responding. After USCGA made it 12-10 at 4:09, Merchant Marine rattled off two-straight goals just 31 seconds apart at 3:27 and 2:56, to tie the score up at 12-apiece, where it stayed into the end of regulation and the first overtime.

The Mariners had two shots on goal in the first OT, but both were saved and then Whitenack hit the post with a shot at the beginning of the second extra frame before Coll out-hustled the Coast Guard defense down the left side and bounced a shot into the cage for the winner.

The Bears also had three players record hat-tricks – sophomore Anthony Wyler (3G, 2A), classmate Jack Pope (3G) and freshman Riley McNulty (3G). Sophomore Colin Cashin won 19-of-29 faceoffs and led all players in the game with 15 groundballs. Sophomore Mike McCaslin led the defense and tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Trey Johnson made 12 saves in the losing effort.

Up next, the Mariners will host Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary in the final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, April 19. The game is part of a lacrosse doubleheader at Brooks Stadium with the men facing off at 5 p.m. and the women following at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
