Mariners Defeat Mount St. Mary, 21-14, To Clinch Skyline Tourney Berth

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 19, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team bested Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 21-14, on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. With the victory, the Mariners clinched a berth in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament. They move to 9-3 (6-2 Skyline) on the season, while the Knights fall to 6-8 (4-4 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) both scored five goals for the Mariners, while Coll also added two assists and Morsberger had one helper. Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led the Mariners with eight points on the night with three goals and five assists.
 
Here was the rest of the scoring on the night for the Mariners: freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) three goals; senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) two goals and two assists; freshman Liam Connors (Bellemore, N.Y.) one goal and two assists; junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) one goal; and junior Max Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) one goal.
 
Whitenack was also a perfect 34-for-34 from the face-off X on the night, setting a new career-high for face-off wins as well as groundballs, as he led all players with 26 GBs. Freshman Troy Brennan (Allentown, Pa.) led the Mariner defense with two caused turnovers.
 
Senior goalie Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) recorded three saves in the first half and was credited with the victory. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) played the second half between the pipes and made eight saves to help secure the win.
 
Mount St. Mary was led by junior Dylan De Meo, who recorded a game-high 11 points on five goals and six assists. Junior goalie Christopher Doerr suffered the loss despite making 14 saves in over 55 minutes of action.
 
The Mariners are back in action on Friday night, April 21, when they travel up to Skyline Conference opponent Purchase for the regular season finale. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available at this link.
