Mariners Fall To Coast Guard, 14-9, At Army West Point On Saturday

WEST POINT, N.Y. (April 14, 2018) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team lost its annual rivalry game against Coast Guard, 14-9, on Saturday at Shea Stadium on the campus of the United States Military Academy. The game was a part of Military Appreciation Weekend at Army West Point, which included a men's & women's Army-Navy lacrosse doubleheader also at the Academy up at Michie Stadium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 9-2, while the Bears improve to 10-2.

Senior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led Merchant Marine with four points on the day on three goals and one assist, while junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) added three points on two tallies and one helper. 

Senior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) contributed a goal and an assist and six other Mariners recorded a point in the loss – senior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomores Nick Roros (Babylon, N.Y.) and Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.) all with a goal each and junior Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.), sophomore Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) and freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) all with an assist apiece. 

In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) suffered the loss despite making nine saves in the opening half. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) played the second half and made two saves. 

At the face-off X, Buser was 10-for-15, and he picked up six groundballs to lead all players on the afternoon. Sophomore defender Jake Erickson (Cicero, N.Y.) gobbled up four GBs on the day and was one of six Mariners to record one caused turnover, while Connors and Roros both had three groundballs apiece. 

After both teams traded goals twice early on, Coast Guard took the lead at the end of the first quarter on a man-up goal giving the Bears a 3-2 lead with 1:18 remaining in the period and that's how the opening frame ended. 

Coast Guard pushed its lead to two for the first time in the game with another man-up at 13:44 of the second. The Mariners tied the game with quick back-to-back goals just 16 seconds apart from each other, evening the score at 12:40. 

The Bears then then hit Merchant Marine with a five-goal run over the next 16-plus minutes to go up 9-4 at 11:15 of the third quarter. The Mariners would not go quietly however, as they scored consecutive goals to bring the score to 9-6 with just over five minutes remaining in the third. 

After a timeout by the Bears, Coast Guard outscored Merchant Marine 5-3 the rest of the way for the victory. 

For the Bears, sophomore Riley McNulty found the back of the net six times and led all players in the game in both goals and points. Junior Anthony Wyler added five points on four goals and one assist and classmate Jack Pope dished out a game-high three assists. 

Junior Colin Cashin won 13-of-26 face-offs and classmate Trey Johnson made seven saves all 60 minutes of action to record the victory between the pipes. Cashin, McNulty and junior Connor Ellis all picked up a team-best five groundballs and seven different Coast Guard players had one caused turnover apiece. 

Up next, the Mariners travel back up to Orange County next Saturday, April 21, for a Skyline Conference contest against Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y. Opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Field. Live stats for the game will be available at this link
