Men’s Lax Locks Up #2 Seed With 19-6 Road Win At Purchase On Saturday

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 27, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team secured the #2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament with a 19-6 road win at Purchase College on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 10-4 (5-1 Skyline), while the Panthers end the season 6-7 (1-5 Skyline). 

Senior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) led all players in the game with seven points on five goals and two assists. Classmate Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) and junior Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) had four points apiece, as the both scored twice and dished out two assists. Juniors Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) and Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) both had three points – Roros scoring three times and Morsberger with two tallies and one assist. 

Senior Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) and freshman Liam Pickett (Charlotte, N.C.) chipped in with two goals apiece and freshman Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.) also found the back of the net. Picking up one assist each in the game were junior Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.)

Senior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won all 16 faceoffs he took and scooped up a game-high 10 groundballs. In net, junior Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) earned the victory after playing the first half and making two saves. In relief in the second half, sophomore Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) made five saves. 

Purchase scored the first goal of the game early in the opening quarter, but the Mariners strung together six straight and then ended the second quarter with another six in a row to take a 12-2 lead into the halftime break. Merchant Marine outscored the Panthers, 5-2, in the third quarter before cruising to the Skyline victory. 

For the Panthers, junior Dan Ohrem led the way with three points on two goals and one assist. Three other players recorded multi-point nights, sophomore Ben Erkan with two goals and senior Dylan Gethicker and sophomore Zach Zarrella with a goal and an assist each. Senior defenseman Brady Fahy led all players in the game with four caused turnovers. In goal, Matt Sayegh made 15 saves in the losing effort. 

The Mariners will host the Skyline semifinals against the #3 seed Farmingdale State Rams on Wednesday, May 1. A time for the game has yet to be announced. The Skyline Conference will unveil the full bracket for the tournament later this weekend.
