KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2018) - The USMMA men's soccer team stole an exciting 2-1 victory over visiting Centenary University on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium thanks to a second-half comeback capped off by an 89th-minute goal by sophomore Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.). The Mariners' record improves to 3-1 on the year, while the Cyclones drop to 1-4.

Merchant Marine trailed 1-0 after the opening half despite outshooting Centenary, 12-5, over the 45 minutes, including four shots on goal that were turned aside by the Cyclones' senior keeper Devon Warne and a couple that were just high (with one hitting off the crossbar).

Centenary's goal came in the 16th minute off a bit of a set "trick" play, when, from the near side at midfield, freshman Sebastian Montoya kicked the ball up the right side and a Cyclone player faked receiving the pass and let it slide under his feet to senior Sebastian Hernandez, who raced up the right side, around the Mariner defense and fired a shot low past junior Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.)

The Mariners struck with the equalizer in the 65th minute, when senior Michael Mischler (Monroe Township, N.J.) corralled the ball near midfield and dribbled up into the attacking third. He let off a high shot that got over Warne's outstretched arms and found the back of the twine.

As the game seemed to be destined for overtime late in the second, Lysakowski notched his third game-winner of the season when he took the ball down the far side, powered past the Cyclone defenders into the box and flicked the ball up into the air, over Warne's arms again, but it bounced to the near post, where Lysakowski's head met the ball and he tapped it into the net with just 1:43 to go in regulation.

When all was said and done, the Mariners finished with a commanding 28-10 advantage in shots, and Warne ended the night with 10 saves. Milner recorded two saves in the victory.

Up next, the Mariners will host non-conference opponent Lehman College this Saturday, Sept. 15. Action is set to get underway at 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page
