KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 17, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team opened the season up on Saturday with the USMMA Memorial Invitational at the O'Hara Hall Pool. The Mariners had two first-place finishes in swim events and had two divers hit NCAA Qualifying Marks to highlight the day.

Senior Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.69, while the 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.), junior Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and freshmen Andrew Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) and Nathan Mathes (Anacortes, Wash.) touched first in 3:19.00.

On the boards, senior Thomas Curry (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) both earned NCAA Qualifying Marks. Curry hit the mark on one-meter board with a score of 283.40, which was good for third place, while McMillan earned the mark on the three-meter board with a 220.20, good for fifth place. The duo now needs to hit the NCAA Qualifying Marks just one more time on their respective boards to officially qualify for the NCAA Diving Regional Meet in March.

Additional notable finishes came from Kahl, who placed second in the 200 back (1:56.58) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:00.87); junior Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) with three third-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (59.15), the 50 free (22.03) and the 200 breast (2:11.93); freshman John Jansen (Valrico, Fla.) with a lifetime best in the 400 individual medley (4:25.50), which was good for second place; and classmate Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio) came in second in the 200 breast (2:10.87).
