LATHAM, N.Y. (March 26, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had a nearly perfect day against Sage in their Skyline Conference opener on Sunday up at the Tri-City Tennis Facility near Albany. The Mariners swept the Gators, 9-0, to improve to 3-1 (1-0 Skyline) on the year. Sage falls to 0-1 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.
USMMA only lost one game in the entirety of the match, as there were straight sweeps over their opponents in eight of the nine flights. All three doubles matches ended with an 8-0 score and then five of the six singles matches finished 6-0, 6-0. The only battle of the day that yielded one lost game was at #2 singles, where the score was 6-1, 6-0.
At #3 doubles, the Mariner duo of seniors Geri Villan (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) claimed the first victory of the day for the Mariners, while at #2, sophomore Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) earned the sweep. The #1 team of senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and sophomore Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) triumphed to close out the double action.
In singles action, Deeter was the first to finish with the straight-set sweep at #3. Hicks clinched the win for Merchant Marine with his pair of doughnuts at #1. Next to finish was Kendall at #4, followed by junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) at #6. McGaffigan at #5 and Zakrevski at #2 were the final two matches to be decided.
Up next, the Mariners are home this Wednesday afternoon, March 29, for a match against arch-rival Coast Guard beginning at 4 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
