KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 2, 2017) – On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary by the score of 7-2. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 4-2 (2-0 Skyline), while the Knights fall to 0-5 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat.
USMMA swept doubles action, with the duo of senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) earning the first point of the day with an 8-1 victory at #2. That was followed by an 8-3 triumph at #1 by senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.). The closest match of doubles came at the third-flight, where freshman Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) and sophomore William Peterson (Midlothian, Va.) won via a 9-7 decision.
In singles play, the Mariners quickly clinched the team win with victories at #4 by Schwartz (6-0, 6-3) and at #6 by Peterson (6-3, 6-3). Kim then followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win at #5 and McGaffigan closed out the scoring for Merchant Marine with a triumph at #2 by the score of 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
The Mariners return to action this Tuesday, April 4, when they travel up to Purchase College to take on the Panthers in another Skyline Conference match. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the campus of SUNY Purchase up in Westchester County.
