KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 21, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team beat Sarah Lawrence College, 8-1, on Friday afternoon in a home Skyline Conference match at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 7-3 (5-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Gryphons fall to 4-4 (2-4 Skyline).
The doubles team of junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) and sophomore Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) swept their opponents at #3, 8-0, with the first finish of the day. That was followed by back-to-back 8-1 wins at #2 by senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) and at #1 by senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and junior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.).
In singles action, Kendall was the first to claim a point at #4 for USMMA when his opponent retired after Kendall took the first set, 6-0. Freshman Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #5.
Hicks and McGaffigan both earned 6-0, 6-1 victories at #1 and #3, respectively and McDonough earned a straight sweep at #2 – 6-0, 6-0.
Sarah Lawrence's only victory of the day came at #6, which was the last match to end.
The Mariners will face first-place Yeshiva on Sunday afternoon, April 23, on the road at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J. Opening serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
