Tennis Falls To Hunter, 8-1, At Home In Season-Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's tennis team opened the 2017-18 campaign on Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 home loss to Hunter College at the Brooks Stadium Courts. 

Freshman Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) picked up the lone point of the day for the Mariners in the #2 singles flight, as he defeated the Hawks' graduate student Florimond Le Goupil-Maier, 6-2, 2-6 and then 10-4 in the third-set tie-breaker. 

In doubles action, junior Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) and freshman Beau Llewellyn (Frederick, Md.) gave their opponents at #3, freshmen Sean Kemp and Shamar Cole, a run for their money – but eventually fell short by the score of 8-4.

The Mariners will send a couple of players up to the ITA Northeast Regionals this coming weekend, hosted by Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Opening rounds of the singles and doubles brackets are set to get underway on Saturday, Sept. 30, and action will continue through to Monday, Oct. 2, for the finals.
