ORLANDO, Fla. (March 8, 2018) – On Thursday, the USMMA tennis team lost two matches down in Florida to Ursinus College and Regis (Mass.), both by the final scores of 5-4. The Mariners' record drops to 1-2, while the UC Bears improve to 5-1 and the Regis Pride's record progresses to 8-3.
Both matches had singles action take place first. Against Ursinus, both teams split the six singles flights. For the Mariners, freshman Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) at #3 (6-4, 6-4), junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) at #4 (4-6, 6-3, 11-9) and sophomore Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) at #5 (6-3, 1-6, 10-7) all had victories.
In doubles, the Mariners took a 4-3 lead in the match when McGaffigan and junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) won at #3, 8-3. However, the Bears tied the match up with an 8-1 victory at #1 and the fate of the match came down to #2. Zakrevski and senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) trailed 7-1 in their match and fought all the way back to within two after taking four straight games, but that was all they could muster, as Ursinus' duo of senior Peter Shields and freshman Mason Groff claimed an 8-5 victory to seal the team win.
Against Regis, the first four singles matches to end all went the way of the Pride, but Zakrevski at #2 (7-6, 6-2) and McDonough at #1 (6-2, 6-3) finished singles strong for the Mariners.
Despite wins at #1 doubles by Booth and fellow freshman Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) (8-1) and at #2 doubles by Zakrevski and McDonough (8-4), the match was clinched when the #3 doubles flight was the first to finish when Regis' freshmen Tim Miller and Mitchell Weiner had an 8-6 triumph.
The Mariners close out their spring break trip tomorrow, Friday, March 9, when they face Saint John's (Minn.) at 12-noon.
