FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 9, 2018) – The USMMA tennis team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State, 9-0, on the road on Monday. With the win, the Mariners' overall record moves above .500 for the first time this season, as they improve to 6-5 (4-0 Skyline), while the Rams fall to 1-6 (1-2 Skyline).
Merchant Marine lost only three total games over the three doubles flight, as the #1 flight of freshmen Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) and Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) won their match-up, 8-1, followed by the #3 pairing of senior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) and junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) winning by an 8-0 shutout. The team of senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) made it a clean sweep of the opening three points with an 8-2 triumph at #2.
All of the singles decisions were in straight sets with Carey finishing first with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at #2, followed by Deeter at #5 winning by a 6-1, 6-2 score. The Mariners then claimed three-consecutive triumphs by the identical scores of 6-2, 6-1 by Booth at #3, Zakrevski at #4 and Schwartz at #6. McDonough rounded out the victory with a 6-0, 7-5 win at #1.
