Tennis Edges Mount St. Mary, 5-4, For Key Skyline Victory

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 11, 2018) – The USMMA tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-4 road Skyline victory up at Mount St. Mary College on Wednesday night. The win, which was the Mariners' fifth-straight, improves their record to 7-5 (5-0 Skyline), while the Knights fall to 6-5 (2-1 Skyline) in defeat. 

The Mariners built up a 2-1 lead after doubles action, with the #2 duo of senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) ending first with an 8-1 victory, followed by MSMC taking #3 by a 9-7 score to tie the match up at 1-1 and then the #1 pairing of freshmen Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) and Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) closing out doubles by claiming an 8-5 win. 

In singles, every match the Mariners won was followed by a victory by the Knights. Booth finished first at #3 with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph, followed by Mount St. Mary winning at #4. Then junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) had a huge 6-1, 7-5 victory at #5, but the Knights crawled back to within just one point with a win at #1. Finally, Carey clinched the match for Merchant Marine with a 7-5, 6-3 "W" at #2.

The Mariners are back in action this Friday, April 13, for another Skyline road contest, this time up at Sarah Lawrence College. First serve in doubles action is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Gryphons' SLC Courts on their campus in Bronxville, N.Y.
