Mariner Men Come In Second In Skyline Championship Meet On Sunday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 28, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's track & field team came in second place in the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship Meet, hosted by Farmingdale State on Sunday. The Mariners scored a total of 172 points as a team on the day, which was behind just the champions, the host Rams, who led the pack with 263 points. 

Two Mariners claimed first-place finishes and earned All-Skyline First Team – senior Jesse Byorth (Billings, Mont.) in the javelin (46.47m – 152-05) and freshman Tyler Pittman (Albuquerque, N.M.) in the 3000m Steeplechase (10:25.59). 

Nine other Mariners produced All-Skyline Second Team performances with second-place finishes on the day. They are listed below. 

  • 800m – sophomore Patrick Porch (Halstead, Kan.) in 2:03.46
  • 1500m – freshman Nicholas Arima (Honolulu, Hawaii) in 4:16.81
  • 5000m – freshman Lucas Jordan (Littleton, Colo.) in 16:39.80
  • 110m Hurdles – senior Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.) in 16.53
  • 400m Hurdles – freshman David Cozad (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in 1:00.75
  • 3000m Steeplechase – senior James Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn.) in 10:34.22
  • 4x100m Relay – freshman Ian Russo (Greensboro, N.C.), Henley, Cozad and senior Trever Huss (Orange City, Iowa) in 3:41.19
  • Hammer – sophomore Ivan Goretoy (West Warwick, R.I.) in 46.28m (151-10)
  • Discus – Goretoy in 36.32m (119-02)
  • Long Jump – Henley in 6.04m (19-09.75)

The Mariners who have qualified for the ECAC Championship Meet will continue to train for the event which will take place on May 15-16 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn.
