BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2017) – The USMMA men's cross country team came in first place at the Queensborough Invitational on Sunday morning at Van Cortlandt Park and senior Austin MacElrevey (Lewes, Del.) won his second straight race to lead the Mariners. The squad scored 84 points, a full 64 points ahead of second place Monroe College (148). Suffolk Community College came in third with 152 points and Merchant Marine's fellow Skyline Conference opponent SUNY Maritime was the second place DIII team, as they placed fourth overall with 202 points.
MacElrevey crossed the finish line of the 8K race in 27:45.5, just under a minute ahead of second-place Clive Griffiths of Purchase College. Junior Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) was not far behind, as he came in fourth place with a time of 28:45.6 and classmate James Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn.) placed 23rd in 30:28.8. Rounding out the Mariners' top five were freshman Gabriel Tapia-Suarez (Leonia, N.J.) in 26th place (30:31.9) and classmate Patrick Porch (Halstead, Kan.) in 30th place (30:40.5).

The Mariners return to action next Saturday, Sept. 23, when they take part in the Bard Raptors Invitational up in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. The men's 8K race is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. at the cross country course on the campus of Bard College.
