All Five Starters Score In Double-Figures To Power Mariners Past St. Joseph’s-L.I., 85-54

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team upended Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island, 85-54, on the road Wednesday night at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Athletic Center. The Mariners' record moves to 10-3 (6-2 Skyline), while SJC falls to 4-8 (1-5 Skyline) in defeat. 

USMMA got a full team effort for the "W," as all five starters scored in double-figures on the night and three players posted double-doubles. Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led all players with a career-high 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field with a career-best five three-pointers on eight attempts. She also added a game-high three steals and three blocks in the victory. 

For the second-straight game, both senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) and sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) recorded double-doubles, as Carmon had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Peters drained 15 points and brought down 10 boards to go along with three steals, which tied D'Arcy for the game-high. 

Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) also picked up her first-career double-double with 11 points and 10 assists and senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed 11 points and seven assists. Off the bench, sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) added nine points and nine rebounds and freshman Kathryn Kelley (Quanitco, Va.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with two points. 

The Mariners led by double-figures by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. They took their largest lead of the night at 3:01 of the third when Peters hit a jumper assisted by Vega that put them up by 37 points, 65-28. 

For St. Joseph's, senior Andrea Iavarone had a team-best 16 points and eight rebounds and freshman Jami Cardenas contributed 11 points off the bench.

This coming Saturday, Jan. 13, the Mariners will host Farmingdale State in the first game of a Skyline doubleheader at the newly-renovated Liebertz Gymnasium beginning at 12-noon. At the conclusion of the women's game, at approximately 1:30 p.m., there will be a special ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new gym floor.
