BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence College, 72-49, on the road Thursday night at the Gryphons' Campbell Sports Center. With the win, the Mariners improve to 3-0 (2-0 Skyline) on the season, while SLC falls to 0-4 (0-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) continued her remarkable start to the season, notching her third-straight double-double and just missing out on her second-straight 30-point performance with a game-high 29 points and 16 rebounds (eight offensive and eight defensive).
Junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) notched nine points, while also bringing down six boards to go along with four assists and two steals. Classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) nearly recorded a triple-double with eight points, nine rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Also notching eight points in the victory were junior Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and freshman Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.). Peters added eight rebounds and Dahlke dished out five assists.
Off the bench, freshman Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) chipped in with four points, while sophomores Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) and Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) as well as freshman Allison Schieffer (Elbert, Colo.) all had two points.
The first five minutes of the game were back-and-forth with the two teams trading the lead five times. The Gryphons went ahead by three points, 12-8, at 4:19, and then later expanded that lead to a game-high four points, 16-12, at 1:36, but consecutive baskets by Hunter in the final minute-plus tied the game up at 16-16 by the time the buzzer sounded ending the first quarter. Hunter finished the quarter with 12 points.
The freshman scored the first two baskets for the Mariners in the second quarter, as they went ahead 20-18 at 8:28. Over a four-minute span, the only basket came on a jumper by Dahlke that made it 22-18, but USMMA exploded in the final four-plus minutes, as the Mariners finished off a 16-0 run to take a 34-18 lead at 2:16. They went into the locker room at halftime with a 36-25 advantage.
A 20-8 run for Merchant Marine in the third quarter put the game well out of reach.
For Sarah Lawrence, senior Taryn Penna scored a team-best 15 points, while also leading the Gryphons with five rebounds, and freshman Camryn Davis contributed 12 points.
The Mariners are back in action this Sunday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Brooklyn to face non-conference opponent Medgar Evers. Action is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. at the Cougars' Cave. Currently there are no live links for the contest, but if there will be any, they will be posted to the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
