NEW YORK (Dec. 13, 2018) – On Thursday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University, 71-58, at Baruch College's ARC Arena in Manhattan. The win improves the Mariners' record to a perfect 8-0 (5-0 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 5-6 (3-5 Skyline) in defeat.

Four players scored in double-digits for the USMMA, with junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) leading the way with 24 points, followed by freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.), who had another double-double with 19 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, then classmate Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) with 11 points and sophomore Kiana Vega (Frisco, Texas) with 10 off the bench. Junior Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) was also a presence down low with 12 rebounds on the night.

The Mariners scored the first four points of the game and led for half of the opening quarter. Yeshiva took its first lead at 4:22 and the two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with the Macs ending the scoring with 44 seconds left to take a 13-11 lead into the second.

YU went ahead by its largest margin of the night, five points – 19-14 – at the 6:43 mark of the second quarter, but the Mariners responded by ending the quarter with a 17-5 run to take a 31-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Merchant Marine lead hit double-digits midway through the third quarter, as the Mariners led the entire frame. The Maccabees got to within two points twice in the fourth quarter, including at 7:18 when it was 48-46 in favor of the visitors, but USMMA was able to hold off the hosts from getting any closer, as the Mariners pulled from that point, scoring nine-straight and never looking back.

For the Macs, senior Nicole Bick scored a game-high 26 points, while junior Tehilla Teigman added 11. Senior Michal Alge brought down a game-high 17 rebounds and led all players with five steals in the losing effort.

Up next, the Mariners will host non-conference opponent the College of New Rochelle this Sunday, Dec. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 12-noon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page
