KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 29, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team cruised to a 69-37 victory over Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island on Tuesday evening at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 16-1 (12-1 Skyline) with the win, while SJC falls to 3-16 (2-10 Skyline) in defeat.

USMMA had four players score in double-figures, as junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led the way with 21 points. D'Arcy also swatted a team-high five shots and grabbed six boards. Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) recorded her 14th double-double of the year, pulling down a team-best 11 rebounds to go along with 13 points.

Freshman Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) dropped 11 points and knocked down a team-best three three-pointers, while sophomore Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) drained 12 points off the bench. Junior Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) dished out a team-best six assists to go along with 10 rebounds and classmate Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) snatched nine boards and had four blocks on the night.

The Mariners dominated the Golden Eagles on the boards 50-35, while holding them to just 25% shooting from the field on the night (13-for-52).

Hunter scored the first seven Mariner points for a 7-2 lead, and a Dahlke three-pointer at 3:45 increased it to 10-2. Merchant Marine led 14-4 after the first quarter and displayed their defensive prowess early, holding the Golden Eagles to two points until senior Alicia Indence hit 2-of-3 free-throws with less than one second left.

St. Joe's went on a 7-3 run to start second quarter, trimming the USMMA lead down to six, 17-11, but the Mariners regained the momentum down the stretch with a 15-6 run, to take a 32-17 lead into halftime.

D'Arcy's three-pointer increased the USMMA margin to 37-19, at 7:58 of the third. St. Joseph's would construct a 13-6 run late in the third quarter, to get within 10, 43-33, but the Mariners held the Golden Eagles to four points in the final quarter, motoring to a 69-37 decision.

Freshman Alyssa Signor led SJC with 12 points, while Indence chipped in with 10. Juniors Juliana Cintron-Leonardo and Cailee Greco had a team-high five rebounds apiece.
