NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 18, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team defeated arch-rival Coast Guard, 12-11, on Saturday in their 2017 Superintendents' Trophy contest up at the Coast Guard Academy. The Mariners improve to 2-0 on the season with the victory, while the Bears fall to 1-4.
Sophomore Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) led all players on the afternoon with five points on three goals and two assists, while also tying for the game-high with three groundballs to go along with one draw control and a huge caused turnover late in the game.
Classmate Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) and freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) both recorded a game-best four goals apiece. Willard had two groundballs, two draw controls and also caused one turnover in the final minute, while McHugh tied for the game-high with three groundballs.
Sophomore Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) also found the back of the net for the Mariners, fast freshman Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) registered five draw controls to lead all players and junior Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) caused a game-high two turnovers. In goal, sophomore Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made six saves to record the victory.
The first and second halves of the game seemed to follow the same script – Coast Guard came out strong to start, and the Mariners strung together a bunch of goals to take a lead.
In the first half, the Bears built up a 4-1 advantage before Merchant Marine scored five straight to take a 6-4 lead with 8:09 to play. Coast Guard scored two goals over the next four minutes to tie the game up at 6-6 and that's where it stayed into the halftime break.
The Bears scored the first three goals of the second half just over four minutes into action, but the Mariners again responded with five straight to take an 11-9 lead. Coast Guard answered with a tally at 9:48, before the Mariners moved their advantage back up to two goals, 12-10, at 5:07. The Bears wouldn't go quietly, however, as they inched closer with 3:44 remaining.
After the Mariners won the ensuing draw control, the Coast Guard defense caused a big turnover with just over a minute remaining and then the Bears burnt their final timeout to draw up a play. Once the game resumed, however, Malone forced a Coast Guard turnover and the Mariners brought the ball back down to the Bears' end.
Malone ripped a shot with 47 seconds remaining and the Bears' keeper, senior Hannah Delguercio, made the save and scooped up the ball, but Willard caused the final turnover when Delguercio attempted to clear the ball and the Mariners held on for the victory.
Delguercio ended the game with eight saves in the losing effort. The Bears had eight different goal scorers, with sophomore Anna McGoldrick and freshmen Abigail Bradford and MegMarie Stanchi all scoring a team-best two times. Bradford and sophomore Carter Sanderson both had three points, as Bradford also chipped in with one assist and Sanderson scored once and added two helpers. Stanchi and junior Daria McKenna both tied for the game-high with three groundballs, junior Cecelia Hosley led Coast Guard with four draw controls and six different players had one caused turnover each.
Up next, the Mariners host New Paltz next Saturday, March 25, as part of a USMMA lacrosse doubleheader at Brooks Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., after the preceding men's game.
