KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 28, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team was defeated at home in a non-conference contest by visiting Ramapo College, 10-7, on a rainy Tuesday night at Brooks Stadium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to an even 2-2 on the season, while the Roadrunners improve to 5-3 with the victory.
Sophomore goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) recorded a season-high 17 saves on the night, while also leading the team with seven groundballs. Freshman Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) scored a game-high four times, sophomore Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) had two goals and one assist and freshman Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) contributed a goal and two helpers.
Defensively, Parker led the way by tying for the game-high with five caused turnovers. Parker also picked up three groundballs and she, McHugh and junior Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.) all had a team-best two draw controls apiece.
The Mariners struck first just 18 seconds into the game and then built up a 3-0 lead in the opening six-plus minutes. The Roadrunners answered back with four of the next five tallies to tie the game up at 4-4 with 7:51 remaining in the first. After Willard scored her second of the night to put USMMA back ahead, Ramapo struck right back 20 seconds later to tie the score and then just over a minute after that to take a 6-5 lead at 4:21. McHugh ended the scoring in the half with her third, assisted by Parker, at 2:21 and the two teams went into the locker rooms tied up a 6-6.
The Roadrunners came out strong to start the second, scoring just over a minute into action to grab a 7-6 advantage. The defense tightened up over the next 10 minutes, as the next goal didn't come until 19:28 when Ramapo scored their second of four consecutive. McHugh scored the final of her four goals at 8:57, but the Mariners could not inch closer.
Freshman Ava Rinaldi recorded a hat trick to lead the Roadrunner offense, while junior Colleen Manley added two goals. Two other players, juniors Brianna Himpele and Marissa Cooney, both had a goal and an assist each. Junior goalie Monica Bubello made five saves for the victory between the pipes.
