KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 9, 2018) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) was named the Skyline Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is the second time this season that Willard earned this accolade (March 19), and it comes after she helped lead the Mariners to a 16-7 road win in their Skyline-opener at Farmingdale State this past Saturday.
Willard recorded her third double-digit point effort of the season with a game-high 10 points on seven goals and three assists. The junior also picked up two groundballs and two draw controls in the victory.
Willard currently ranks in the top-10 among all Division III players in two categories, as she is eighth in the nation with 7.00 points per game, while also ranking ninth with 5.00 goals per game. Classmate Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) is in the top-25 in the country in two categories – 22nd with 7.25 draw controls per game and 24th with 4.50 goals per game.
As a team, the Mariners are in the top-15 among all DIII women's lacrosse program in three categories – fifth with 37.88 shots per game, eighth with 28.88 shots on goal per game and 14th with 26.00 groundballs per game.
The Mariners are back in action Tuesday afternoon when they travel to the Bronx, N.Y. for a Skyline Conference showdown with Mount St. Vincent.
