BRONX, N.Y. (April 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team triumphed over Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Vincent, 11-6, on Tuesday afternoon at CMSV's Athletic Field at Marillac. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 7-2 (2-0 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to 3-4 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat.
Just two players scored for USMMA, as junior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) recorded her third seven-goal game of the season and classmate Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) scored four times. Willard and fellow junior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) both dished out one assist apiece.
Reilly also led all players in the game with six draw controls and career-highs with 11 groundballs and nine caused turnovers. Both Willard and junior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) picked up six GBs and had three CTs apiece.
In goal, Gizzi recorded three saves for her seventh victory of the season.
The Mariners opened up a 2-0 lead after four-plus minutes and expanded it to 4-1 just over 10 minutes into the game. The two teams traded the next two goals in the follow 10 minutes and neither team found the back of the net in the final third of the opening half, so Merchant Marine took a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
After Mount St. Vincent scored just over two minutes into the second half to make it a two-goal game, the Mariners responded with five-straight goals to go ahead 10-3 at 11:37. The Dolphins scored three of the game's last four goals, but were unable to climb out of the hole.
CMSV was led by sophomore Shannon Dalton, who scored two goals and senior Meg Merrell and freshman Emma Dell'Aquila, who each added a goal and an assist. In goal, freshman Allyson Weakliem suffered the loss despite making 14 saves.
The Mariners return to action this Saturday, April 14, for a home Skyline contest against Old Westbury beginning at 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game are available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
