Mariners Earn Program-Record 15th Win After Closing Out Perfect Regular Season With 22-3 Victory At Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 26, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team had 11 different players find the scoresheet en route to its program-record 15th victory of the season, a 22-3 road triumph up at Purchase College on Friday. The Mariners close out the regular season with a perfect 15-0 mark (7-0 Skyline) and will be the #1 seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament next week, while the Panthers end the year 1-10 (0-7 Skyline). 

Senior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) led the way with six points on three goals and three assists, while junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) and freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) both found the back of the net five times. Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) was one of five USMMA players with two points, as she scored twice, and classmate Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.), juniors Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) and Sage Hicks-Fredenburg (Rockledge, Fla.) as well as freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) all had a goal and an assists each. 

Rounding out the Mariner scorers were senior sisters Elizabeth and Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and freshman Helen Davis (Dagsboro, Del.), all with a goal apiece. Malone registered a game-best seven draw controls, while she and Reilly both gobbled up six groundballs to lead all players. Reilly also caused a game-best three turnovers. 

Senior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made three saves to earn the victory, while freshman Sunny Rooney (Ardsley, Pa.) had one stop in relief. 

For the Panthers, sophomore Maddy Mecca scored twice and classmate Gabriella Castles had the other tally. Castles also secured four draw controls, while causing two turnovers, and freshman Sigrid Cassell led the team with four groundballs. In goal, junior Brianna Pirozzi made nine saves in the losing effort. 

Up next, the top-seeded Mariners will host the Skyline semifinals on Wednesday, May 1, against the #4 seed. A start time has yet to be announced. The Skyline Conference will unveil the entire bracket for the women's lacrosse tournament later this weekend.
