Bunce Wins Heavyweight Bracket To Highlight Season-Opening Roger Williams Invite

BRISTOL, R.I. (Nov. 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team opened up the 2018-19 season on Saturday up at the Roger Williams Invitational in Rhode Island. Senior Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) highlighted the event by winning the heavyweight bracket in completely dominating fashion with a total of three falls on the day. 

Bunce earned back-to-back victories via falls in the first two rounds over Chris Nizielski of Wesleyan in 1:12 and Roger Williams' Jack Rogers in 1:39. He then defeated Johnson & Wales' Liridon Leka by way of a major decision, 11-0 before pinning Mike Risti Gorham of Southern Maine in the finals in 3:24. 

Freshman William Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had an impressive debut in his first collegiate competition, as he went 3-2 on the day in the 174 lb. bracket. 

Two other Mariners picked up wins on the day – senior Daniel May (Stafford, Va.) at 141 and freshman X'avier Carbonaro (Blairstown, N.J.) at 157.
