YORK, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2018) – Senior Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) came in second place in the 285 lb. bracket and freshman Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) placed sixth at 174 to highlight the USMMA wrestling team's performances at York College's New Standard Corp. Invitational this weekend in Pennsylvania.
Bunce, who was selected as the #2 seed in the bracket, won three of his first four matches of the meet via pins to reach the finals. He lost the championship match to the #1 seed and fifth-ranked heavyweight wrestler in the country, Jake O'Brien of Ithaca, by the narrow score 2-1. Both wrestlers earned just escape points, but O'Brien had over a minute's worth advantage in riding time to claim the victory. Bunce now boasts a 12-2 record on the season with six pins.
Sims won his first match on Friday afternoon, but lost his second to drop to the consolation bracket. He earned back-to-back victories there to reach the consolation semifinals, but ended action with consecutive losses in the semis and the fifth-place match to finish in sixth.
As a team, the Mariners tied for 12th place out of the 16 teams at the meet. They earned 40.5 points. Johnson & Wales won with 154.5 points, while Ithaca (106.5) and Baldwin Wallace (100) rounded out the top three.
Up next, the Mariners will host the Mariner Duals next Sunday, Dec. 9. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live video for all of USMMA's matches on the day will be available at this link.
