KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 14, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team hosted the eighth-ranked team in the country, Baldwin Wallace, on Friday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Despite winning three of the final four bouts, the Mariners lost to the Yellow Jackets by the final of 28-16. In defeat, USMMA's record drops to 0-4, while BWU improves to 5-1.
The night started with a pair of exhibition matches at 141, which Baldwin Wallace claimed – both via pins.
In the main dual, the Yellow Jackets got out to a 3-0 lead after a decision at 125. That was followed by senior Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) winning his first match of the season at 133 via a 7-4 decision to tie the match up at 3-apiece.
The visitors started to distance themselves over the next four weight classes, as they grabbed back-to-back major decisions at 141 and 149, a tech. fall at 157 and then a pin at 165 to go ahead 22-3.
The Mariners responded with back-to-back wins of their own, as freshman Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) earned a 13-3 major decision at 174, followed by a 2-0 win by junior Joshua Glantzman (Allenwood, N.J.) in sudden victory at 184.
Baldwin Wallace clinched the match with a pin at 197, but senior Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) ended the night on a good note for Merchant Marine, as he earned a hard-fought pin in 5:50 at heavyweight.
The Mariners are right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 15, when they travel to Nassau Community College to take part in the annual Long Island Open. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. on the campus of N.C.C. in Garden City, N.Y.
