Women’s Swim & Dive Team Triumphs Over Mount St. Mary

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's swimming & diving team defeated visiting Mount St. Mary in a Skyline showdown of a couple of undefeated conference teams on Saturday, 213-76, at the O'Hara Hall Pool. In triumph, the Mariners improve to 8-0 overall (7-0 Skyline), while the Knights fall to 6-1 (2-1 Skyline) in defeat. 

USMMA won every single event on the afternoon. Listed below are the victors. 

  • Freshman Chase Massey (Friendswood, Texas), junior Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.), freshman Samantha Hunt (Franklin, Texas) and sophomore Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.) in the 200 medley relay (1:57.99)
  • Junior Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) in the 1000 freestyle (11:44.04), the 100 backstroke (1:05.74) and the 500 free (5:38.72)
  • Kirshner in the 200 free (2:02.03), the 100 free (55.39) and the 100 fly (1:02.57)
  • Lou in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.70) and the 200 individual medley (2:27.60)
  • Hunt in the 200 butterfly (2:23.56)
  • Massey in the 50 free (26.23) and the 200 back (2:21.53)
  • Senior Kara Korengel (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the one-meter dive (212.85) and the three-meter dive (208.13)
  • Sophomore Emily Orski (East Islip, N.Y.) in the 200 breast (2:48.66)
  • and Hunt, Gathy, sophomore Christina Hogan (North Andover, Mass.) and Massey in the 200 free relay (1:45.91) 

The following swimmers also attained season-best times today. 

  • Sophomore Angeline Lei (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) by 26 seconds in 1000 free (12:49.12) and in the 50 free (29.05)
  • Kirshner by .5 in the 200 free (2:02.03) and in the 100 free (55.39)
  • Junior Marley Rakow (Bishopville, Md.) in the 100 back (1:11.11)
  • Orski in the 100 breast (1:19.35) and the 200 breast (2:48.66)
  • Hunt in the 100 fly (1:04.10) and the 200 fly by one second (2:23.56)
  • Massey in the 50 free (26.23) and the 200 back by one second (2:21.53)
  • Lou by seven seconds in the 200 back (2:21.94)
  • Sophomore Jennifer Stelnicki (Chicago, Ill.) by three seconds in the 200 back (2:32.72)
  • Hogan by five seconds in the 500 free (6:04.45)
  • and junior Sara Cosenza (Peoria, Ariz.) in the 200 IM (2:34.60)

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to arch-rival Coast Guard next Saturday, Jan. 19. First event is scheduled for 12-noon at the Bears' Roland Pool on their campus in New London, Conn.
