Women’s Swim & Dive Sees Multiple Academy Records Broken And An NCAA Cut Hit At Met Conference Championship Meet

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 24, 2019 – UPDATED: Feb. 25, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's swimming & diving team competed in the 2019 Metropolitan Conference Championship meet this weekend, hosted by Rutgers University. The Mariners finished the event in seventh place out of the 17 teams that scored. 

Numerous Academy records were broken throughout the weekend, a couple by sophomore Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.), while senior diver Kara Korengel (Cincinnati, Ohio) also hit yet another NCAA Qualifying Mark in the three-meter dive preliminaries back on Friday. 

Kirshner set a new Academy record in the 200 individual medley during the prelims on Friday with a time of 2:11.02. She then broke own record in the event in the finals Friday night, when her 2:10.28 was good for fourth place in the A-Finals race. 

The sophomore was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that established a new Academy record, as she led off the team that featured freshmen Chase Massey (Friendswood, Texas) and Samantha Hunt (Franklin, Texas) with junior Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) anchoring. They touched in 1:39.87, which was the sixth-best time of the event. 

Korengel came in first place in the three-meter dive prelims on Friday with a score of 424.20. She then produced the Mariners' top individual finish of the meet in the finals Friday night, when she came in third place with a 392.50. The senior also placed fourth in the one-meter dive (398.95) on Saturday. 

In all, the Mariners scored in 24 events. Listed below are all of the scorers this weekend.

  • Fourth Place – Korengel in the 1M Dive (393.15)
  • Sixth Place – Kirshner in the 200 Freestyle (1:57.67)
  • Sixth Place – Kirshner in the 100 Freestyle (54.20)
  • 12th Place – Junior Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.) in the 200 IM (2:16.66)
  • 12th Place – Lou in the 200 Breaststroke (2:33.15)
  • 13th Place – Massey in the 100 Backstroke (1:01.83)
  • 14th Place – Hunt in the 100 Butterfly (1:02.22)
  • 14th Place – Hunt in the 200 Butterfly (2:19.66)
  • 15th Place – Hunt in the 50 Freestyle (25.61)
  • 15th Place – Lou in the 100 Breaststroke (1:11.22)
  • 16th Place – Gathy in the 100 Freestyle (56.30)
  • 18th Place – Massey in the 200 Backstroke (2:16.08)
  • 19th Place – Sophomore Christina Hogan (North Andover, Mass.) in the 200 Freestyle (2:05.15)
  • 22nd Place – Senior Colleen Griffin (Kinnelon, N.J.) in the 400 IM (5:23.25)
  • 22nd Place – Hogan in the 100 Freestyle (59.00)
  • 23rd Place – Gathy in the 50 Freestyle (26.02)
  • 23rd Place – Gathy in the 100 Backstroke (1:04.73)
  • Fifth Place – Massey, Lou, Kirshner, Hunt in the 200 Medley Relay (1:52.18)
  • Sixth Place – Kirshner, Massey, Hunt, Gathy in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:39.87)
  • Sixth Place – Massey, Lou, Hunt, Kirshner in the 400 Medley Relay (4:10.86)
  • Sixth Place – Kirshner, Massey, Gathy, Hunt in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:41.71)
  • Seventh Place – Hogan, Lou, sophomore Emily Orski (East Islip, N.Y.), sophomore Angeline Lei (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) in the 800 Freestyle Relay (8:42.39)
