MAHWAH, N.J. (March 31, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's track & field team had a great first day at Ramapo College's Roadrunner Invitational on Friday, as the 4x800 meter relay team finished in second place in their event. That placement earned the Mariners eight team points, which is currently good for eighth place out of the 17 teams that have scored thus far.
The relay squad consisted of freshman Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.), senior Mary Catherine Zehnder (Carle Place, N.Y.), freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) and sophomore Kelsey Ramirez (Stevensville, Mich.). They crossed the finish line with a time of 10:30.21.
In throwing action, freshman Ally McFadyen (Saint James, N.Y.) came in ninth place in the shot put (8.57m or 28' 1.50") and 11th place in the hammer throw (30.43m or 99' 10").
On the men's side, sophomore Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) had the highest finish for USMMA, coming in 14th place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:34.47. In the shot put, junior Billy Pelger (Rocky River, Ohio) placed 15th with a mark of 10.10m or 33' 1.75".
